If you or your child plays sports, it’s important to wear a mouth guard to protect the mouth, teeth and gums from injuries. It’s is usually thought of for contact sports (boxing, football, or hockey), but baseball players, roller-bladers or bicyclers shouldn’t overlook them.
Compared to a good football helmet or hockey stick, (which may cost $200), mouth guards are an inexpensive, but important piece of equipment.
There are a variety of mouth guards available. Some are stock and ready to use with no adjustment, but a minor trimming with scissors. There are also boil and bite mouth guards, for a closer fit. A more serious athlete may choose a custom-fitted mouth guard, which is typically done at the dentist, and uses an impression of the athlete’s teeth to create a custom fit.
Don’t worry, mouth guards can also be worn with braces. The other people who tend to use mouth guards are those who grind their teeth at night.
They are easy to care for – occasionally clean it in cool, soapy water and rinse thoroughly. It’s important to check it for general wear, and I’m happy to examine yours, if you bring it to your next appointment.
