A.K. Smiley Library's Young Readers' Room
Did you know our local library has a dedicated room for children, preschool through 8th grade, to discover books, periodicals, and audio materials? The Young Readers Room even holds special programs and activities for children year-round!
The A.K. Smiley Public Library was established in 1894 by Redlands' winter residents, Alfred and Albert Smiley. The identical twins saw the need for a public library and were quick to help fund the project! You will find all typical public library accouterments -- literature, computers, book donations, used books for sale, databases, audiobooks, even movies. However, if there is one area A.K. Smiley Library excels, it is with our young readers.
The Young Readers Room has all kinds of fun to keep little ones engaged and eager! What is so amazing, you ask? Well...
Redlands Riddle Contest
The monthly Redlands Riddle Contest is co-sponsored by the Rochford Foundation, A.K. Smiley Public Library, The Daily Facts, and the Redlands Community News, and it is too fun! This will give your kids (ages 6-12 years old) something to look forward to and work towards each month.
- This month's riddle, "Two old-fashioned buildings on Disneyland Main Street (pictures found below) inspired new face-lifts for buildings on State Street. Study the photos, look at them downtown carefully. Can you find two buildings that remind you of Disney?"
- Answer: 10/12 E. State St. and 18/20 E. State St. A HUGE congratulations to Jackson, age 10, for answering this riddle correctly and being this month's winner!

Book Recommendations
The Young Readers Room also offers book recommendations made by kids, for kids! Up next is The Goddess Girls series…Artemis the Brave.
Story Time
- Preschool Story Time: in the park at 10:15 AM every Tuesday morning
- Pajama Story Time: in the children’s garden at 7:00 PM every Wednesday evening
- Baby Story Time: in the park at 9:30 AM every Thursday morning
